The Dr. Reijntjes School for the Deaf started on February 2nd, 1984 in Moratuwa. The Founder is Mrs. Tineke de Silva-Nijkamp from the Netherlands. She visited Sri Lanka for the first time in 1974 with her Sri Lankan husband Susiri de Silva.

As she was in her home country a teacher in a Deaf School, she was interested to visit a Deaf School and meet deaf children in Sri Lanka. She got a shock when she travelled to remote villages where she met a lot of deaf children who did not go to school at all. They were treated like mentally retarded children and nobody cared about them. Many were sent to grandparents as the parents thought they had a bad influence on their other hearing children at home.

Tineke felt very bad about it, coming from a country where everything was perfect organized for handicapped children.

She got a dream to help this unfortunate deaf children from rural areas in Sri Lanka.

In 1984 her dream came true when her Deaf School started in a rented house at the Rawathawatta Road in Moratuwa with 8 children on her own expense. Soon there were 16 deaf children who stayed day and night in the School.

That was the beginning that Tineke started raising money in the Netherlands and putting up 6 buildings in a very nice quiet piece of land at Rawathawatta, where at the highest peak 120 deaf scholars got their education with 22 staff members.

The last years the amount of deaf students dropped as there are now in almost every Primary School a Unit for Handicapped Children. Parents like to bring their deaf children now close to their house to the school where also the brothers and sisters are going. The deaf children who got a cochlear implant are on advice of the ENT-Specialist going to a normal Primary School to learn the language better.

The Dr. Reijntjes School for the Deaf conducted some years ago a Beauty Culture Diploma Course for deaf boys and girls of the School. They completed successfully their Diploma Course and several deaf students got a job in a Beauty Salon. After that a Graphic Design Course was conducted and still goes on. Several students followed after that the NVQ Graphic Design Course and got the Certificate. A few students sit every year for the O-Level exam.

In 2017 the Dr. Reijntjes School for the Deaf started with a NVQ-3 Course in Agriculture. This is the first ever conducted NVQ-3 Course in Agriculture in Sri Lanka for deaf students!

At the end of the year 2018 the first batch of deaf students received their Agriculture NVQ-3 certificates. H.E. Mrs. Joanne Doornewaard, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, handed over the Certificates. She is the Patron of this Deaf School.

The 35th Jubilee of the Dr. Reijntjes School for the Deaf was celebrated with a Dana for 20 monks ( also the Dutch Monk Ven. Olande Ananda ) in the School Premises on February 16th. The parents of the deaf pupils participated to organize this event. There were 170 people present. (students, staff, parents, Trust Members and well wishers)

From January 2019 Mr. Mudithe de Silva, the son of Tineke de Silva-Nijkamp, takes over the leadership of the Dr. Reijntjes School for the Deaf as the new Director.

De Dr. Reijntjesdovenschool startte op 2 februari 1984 in Moratuwa Sri Lanka. De oprichter is Tineke de Silva-Nijkamp uit Nederland. Zij bezocht Sri Lanka voor de eerste keer in 1974 met haar Sri Lankaanse echtgenoot, Susiri de Silva.

Omdat Tineke in Nederland werkte als een teacher in een Dovenschool, was ze geinteresseerd in het Dovenonderwijs in Sri Lanka. Ze bezocht een Dovenschool en reisde naar afgelegen dorpjes waar ze dove kinderen ontmoette. Ze was in schock toen ze zag dat dove kinderen niet naar school gingen en aan hun lot werden overgelaten. Ze werden behandeld als geestelijk gehandicapte kinderen en niemand die hen hen een helpende hand bood. Tineke kreeg een droom om deze kansarme kinderen te helpen.

In 1984 werd haar droom werkelijkheid toen ze op 2 februari deze dovenschool startte met 8 dove leerlingen in een gehuurd huis in Moratuwa. Susiri en Tineke betaalden de eerste jaren zelf de huur en de kosten voor het runnen van de school. Al snel waren er 16 dove leerlingen, allen uit afgelegen dorpjes, die dag en nacht aanwezig waren. Het “schooltje” was overvol, Tineke begon daarom met fondsen te werven in Nederland om een schoolgebouw te kunnen neerzetten op een groot stuk grond in Moratuwa. Dit lukte en in de loop der jaren werden de hulp van diverse Nederlandse Organisaties 6 grote gebouwen toegevoegd aan dit Doven Instituut. De naam van Dr. Reijntjes werd gekozen voor deze School omdat Tineke vele jaren in Enschede met Dr. Reijntjes samenwerkte in de Prof. Dr. Huizingschool.

In 2007 waren er maar liefst 120 dove leerlingen en 22 stafleden.

De laatste jaren is het aantal leerlingen gedaald, omdat in alle basisscholen van de Overheid een speciale Unit is voor gehandicapte kinderen is gevestigd. Dat betekent dat de ouders het gemakkelijker vinden om hun dove kind naar die Unit te brengen dichtbij hun huis, waar ook de broertjes en zusje naar school gaan. De dove kinderen met een cochlear implant gaan bovendien naar het normale onderwijs op advies van de KNO-artsen, om sneller te leren praten.

Een paar jaar geleden organiseerde de Dr. Reijntjesdovenschool een Beauty Culture Cursus voor de oudste jongens en meisjes, waarin ze met succes een staatsexamen deden. Velen van hen kregen daarna een baan in Beauty Salons.

Op het moment wordt er nog een Graphic Design Cursus gegeven binnen de School.

In 2017 startte de Dovenschool met een NVQ-level 3 Agriculture Cursus (Vakopleiding) voor de oudste dove studenten. Dit is heel uniek omdat het de eerste keer is dat deze cursus in Sri Lanka voor dove studenten wordt gegeven.

Eind 2018 kreeg de eerste batch hun Certificate, overhandigd door de Patron van onze Dovenschool, H.E. Mrs. Joanne Doornewaard, de Nederlandse Ambassadeur in Sri Lanka.

Ieder jaar zitten er ook een paar leerlingen voor het O-Level (MAVO) Examen.

Het 35-jarige Jubileum van de Dr. Reijntjesdovenschool werd op 16 februari 2019 gevierd met een “Dana” Lunch voor 20 monniken in het Auditorium van de School. De Nederlandse Monnik, Olande Ananda, die al 40 jaar in Sri Lanka woont, was ook aanwezig.

De ouders van de dove leerlingen hielpen mee om deze dag te organiseren. Er waren 170 mensen aanwezig, waaronder de dove kinderen, stafleden, ouders, Trustleden en well wishers van de Dovenschool. In juli 2019 vindt nogmaals een Viering plaats voor de buitenlandse genodigden.

Vanaf 1 januari 2019 heeft Mudithe de Silva, de zoon van Tineke en Susiri, de taak van Tineke overgenomen als Directeur van de Dr. Reijntjesdovenschool in Sri Lanka.
