There has been a heat wave in Sri Lanka since the end of February until now. The government advised not to let children play outside during the hottest hours of the day, due to sunstroke and drink plenty of water. Even at night it was 28 degrees C.
From March 12 to 15, Ms. Elisabeth from Antwerp, herself a deaf artist, gave an Art Workshop to a group of our students. The results looked beautiful.
In the last week of March we went with the students to a large auditorium near the school for 3 afternoons to practice the dances. April 6 was our last day of school before the New Year’s holidays and was also the dance performance with 23 dances (3 of them by our students), organized by our dance teacher Rashmi. The parents of our students were also invited. It was a great evening. Our deaf students received extra attention because they were the only deaf dance group. The parents shed many tears when they saw the beautiful dances in beautiful costumes by their children.
Afterwards, a group of parents and students stayed overnight at the school, because there were no more buses running to their remote villages. That was also quite fun to experience!
On April 24, school started again and there were finally some rain and thunderstorms.
Sandhya, one of our teachers, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2023. She was receiving chemotherapy and was very sick from the treatments. On April 26, she returned to school for the first time to teach 4 days a week. It was quite emotional for all of us to see her again.
