Newsletter first trimester 2025 of the Dr. Reijntjes School for the Deaf
The new school year started on January 6th and 3 out of 10 new deaf students already arrived.
A new teacher also arrived; Nayanathara.
Marion and Thomas from Germany also came this year with new hearing aids for 13 of our deaf students and also for six former students of the school.
On January 26th, a group of six former students came to hang up a beautiful new wooden nameplate of the school, which they had made together under the guidance of Pasindu (a former student who is a carpenter).
On January 31st, Mudithe and Pathum left for Dubai. They were invited to participate in the big “Innovation Fair”, where the University of Singapore demonstrated a new “hearing glasses”. Mudithe de Silva is working on his PhD at the University of Singapore on this subject. After that they travelled to Thailand for a 5-day research program at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. Finally, they flew to Singapore to work on a research project at the University of Singapore for another week. This entire research program was sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation in America.
Simon Nieuwenhuijzen from the Netherlands came to visit our school for his annual trip to Sri Lanka. He brought some fun costumes for the students. The children are always enthusiastic when he comes.
Minuri from South Korea, who volunteered at our school for the deaf for a long time 5 years ago, came to visit for a day. It was a happy reunion.
On March 5, we celebrated the birthday of the founder/principal, Tineke de Silva-Nijkamp. After all the rituals (lighting the large oil lamp, cutting the cake, congratulating and receiving presents and homemade cards), there was a cosy get-together with cake, snacks and a drink. It is customary in Sri Lanka (Buddhist view) to do a “good deed” on your birthday.
Coincidentally, a week before the celebration, people from the MOH came to ask for our support to organize a “Health Camp” on March 6, in the temple near our deaf school. Mudithe de Silva was committed to arranging many things and was asked to give the welcome speech. This day was a great success. Many people visited the various doctors, came for an eye or hearing test or donated blood, including 4 of our staff members. Our deaf school provided 100 sandwiches, 100 cups of milk and 100 bananas for the people who donated blood.
Four of our students sat the O/Level (MAVO) exam from March 17 to 25. This is the same exam that hearing children also take. The difficult language that is used is often the stumbling block for our deaf students. On March 26, we celebrated their farewell with a beautiful presentation of old photos. Two of the parents gave an emotional speech. Oshini was 13 years in our school, Shehan 11 years and Chamalka and Kavishka 9 years as boarders in our Deaf school.
The last week of March was the test week for the reports.
