On the first day of May, we had many Dutch visitors at our Deaf school. The Van Tuijl family, old acquaintances from Opijnen, came with 6 family members to spend a day at the school. They have meant a lot to our Deaf school. It was a very special and pleasant day with a warm welcome, games, lots of presents and chocolate for the children. The day ended with a delicious catering lunch, offered by the Bridge Club from Opijnen!
One of our teachers, Sandhya, was treated with chemotherapy for breast cancer since November last year. She returned to school for the first time this month.
With the students, we watched the video of the beautiful dance performance of April 6, in which our students also performed 3 dances. Afterwards, the deaf children received a certificate of participation from Rashmi, our dance teacher.
On May 15, there was a “Workshop on Sex Education in schools” for the staff members. We had invited a professional group of people with doctors, psychologists and social workers. Everyone was very pleased with the results of this workshop. Our first group of students will soon be given information about this topic and they can ask questions. We would also like to involve the parents, because this topic is still somewhat taboo in Sri Lanka.
Ester Kamps from Goes came to visit after many years with her 2 adult children. They have done a lot for our Deaf School, especially when Peter Kamps was still alive. They brought a lot of school materials and sweets for the deaf students.
Yasith, a researcher from the University of Singapore, has been working for almost a year at our Deaf School to develop glasses that allow deaf people to read the verbal language of hearing people in their own language. Our teacher Piumi and the oldest students are actively involved in this important project.
May is the month of Vesak, the most important Buddhist festival, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha. People decorate and illuminate their houses with lanterns and the temples and large buildings look beautiful. When it gets dark, everything is lit and people go around to watch this beautiful spectacle. There are food stalls everywhere that offer free meals or soup, ice cream and drinks. This lasts for about a week.
With the students we also made lanterns to decorate the school!
