On October 2, a group of students from the Asian International School, visited our Deaf School. They were very interested, had already collected information about deaf children and knew 2 signs. They brought presents for the children and also rice, lentils, tea, etc.
For many years, students from the University of Singapore have been engaged in research activities with our deaf students. The “haptic chair” (chair with bone conduction) was introduced 15 years ago by Prof. Suranga Nanayakkara and his students. It turned out to be a great success. Other aids were also introduced, which were tested in our Deaf School by the research team, in which Mudithe de Silva (director) and Pathum Madushan (ITN-Instructor) always participated. A year ago, AI glasses for the deaf were introduced by Prof. Nanayakkara and his team, on which the text of the spoken language of people can be read. This way, deaf people can easily communicate with hearing people.
On October 6, Mudithe and Pathum left for Singapore for 10 days, at the invitation of the University of Prof. Nanayakkara, to further develop the “deaf glasses” together with the researchers.
On October 7, we celebrated International Teacher’s Day with the deaf students. They had all made beautiful cards. All staff members provided a treat with tea.
On October 14 and 15, most schools in Sri Lanka were closed due to the floods and impassable roads. Because all students live here internally, we were fortunately able to teach as usual.
Nienke and Esther, the two volunteers, quickly got used to it and immediately started with sign language under the guidance of the staff members and deaf children. They enjoy the “rice and curries” that they eat with their hands, just like everyone else here in Sri Lanka! This month, they baked pancakes together with the students. They also gave a presentation on the smart board about their life in the Netherlands and about food.
