On September 2, the students and staff returned after a month’s vacation. 3 new deaf children arrived from the Galle District.
Miss Gayathri had a baby girl on September 5. Everything is going well with mother and child. We will visit her soon.
A new matron, Damayanthi, started on September 10. She has worked as a matron in another school for the deaf and is fully fluent in sign language.
On September 12, the two Dutch volunteers, Nienke and Esther, arrived. They will assist in our deaf school for 3 months.
The presidential elections were held in Sri Lanka on September 21. This was the first time in a long time that no incidents occurred and everything went peacefully. The new president received 42% of the votes and comes from a left-wing Marxist party. We are curious to see how he will rule.
On October 1, we celebrated International Children’s Day in our school garden with a total of 200 children. The initiative came from our dance teacher Rashmi. She had invited her dancing children to perform 15 dances here. Our deaf students did 3 dances. Afterwards, all children were allowed to dance freely with beautiful music led by a DJ. That was really enjoyable.
