The New Year was ushered in Sri Lanka with even more fireworks than other years! People were relieved because the number of corona infections had been reduced to 365 cases a day.
The staff members came back in the last week of December after a short vacation to prepare everything for the arrival of the children on January 3, 2022. All corona safety regulations still applied. The parents and students adhered to the rules very well.
The first day we showed the students on the big screen all the old videos about the corona rules in our Deaf school and beyond to refresh their memory.
For the first time in 2 years, the dance teacher was allowed to teach dance again. All students enjoyed the first lesson in their new dance clothes. It took some time getting used to for the newcomers.
Four of the oldest students will be sitting for their GCE-O-Level Exam in May. They now receive a lot of extra tutoring after school from their teacher Piumi. In order to send all the documents for the Examination Committee on time, one of the staff members went with them to the ENT doctor for a doctor’s note that they are deaf and to an Audiological Center for a new audiogram.
January 18 was a special day because the new “Smart Board” was introduced. Our Deaf School is the first Deaf School in Sri Lanka to teach with such a Smart Board. Mudithe had already completed 2 training sessions in Colombo and the following training sessions were given to the staff members by experts in our school. For deaf children it is a unique communication system because all lessons, even speech therapy, can be given with this board.
Fortunately, this year the annual climbing of Adams’ Peak was able to continue on January 25 and 26! The preparations were almost as exciting as the trip itself! Unfortunately, Lakshitha was unable to attend due to his heart defect.
Two of our deaf past pupils reported that they had found a job. Ushan now works in the “Government Printing Press” in Colombo and Vihanga at the Pizza Hut in Moratuwa. Many of the other past students work in Beauty Salons, as Graphic Designers or in the Clothing Industry.
